Be Ye Kind

“Non-Violence” sculpture by Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd

I think that we love our guns way too much. We love how they make us feel. We love the power and the sense of superiority that they give us.

We even love how they feel in our hands. There is this sensual, almost phallic nature about guns that secretly seduces us, inexplicably drawing us to them.

We have grown to rely on guns for our protection and as a means of settling disputes that we just can't seem to find other solutions for. And we keep dying because of it. Our children are dying, our neighbors are dying, innocent people are dying. Why?

I wish that there was an easy answer, but there isn't. Shooting people seems to be the easy answer because if talking to those you have a problem with were easy we wouldn't keep seeing news stories about mass shootings.

In the fourth chapter of Apostle Paul's letter the the believers in Ephesus he gives some practical advice about living in community and getting along with others. Here is part of what the Apostle wrote that I feel is a good starting point for getting along with those around us without resorting to violence.

"If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day...

...Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ." (Ephesians 4:26 & 32)

Love Is The Fulfillment Of The Law

Love does no harm

to a neighbor;

therefore love is the fulfillment

Jesus said to them, “But, whom do you say that I am?”

Then Simon Peter answered, and said, “You are the Christ; the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus answered, and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon, the son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my Father Who is in Heaven."

The inspiration for creating "Rock Mass" came from the Rock Mass at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena California back in the early 1970’s. On the first Friday night of each month All Saints held a Rock Mass which was a mix of traditional Episcopalian Mass and rock concert. A live band would play popular rock music which couldn’t necessarily be called “Christian” but contained spiritual phrases and references to God or Jesus. During the 1960’s and early 1970’s there was an explosion of these songs coming out of the "secular" music industry way before there was “Contemporary Christian Music”, in a way, it could be called "The Gospel According To Billboard's Top 10".

Rock Mass for Sunday February 7, 2021

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
(1John 4:7&8)

If anyone says, "I love God", yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
(1John 4:20&21)

"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
(Matthew 22:36-40)

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
-JESUS (John 13:34&35)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
(Galatians 5:22&23)

WHOEVER IS WISE,
LET HIM HEED THESE THINGS
AND CONSIDER
THE GREAT LOVE
OF THE LORD.
(Psalms 107:43)

Our Allegiance

"Our allegiance is not to the rulers and parties and causes of this age. We are the sons and daughters of God. We are brothers and sisters by adoption to our precious, crucified savior, Jesus. Our calling and mission is to do the works that Jesus did, as he empowers us by the Holy Spirit: Heal the sick, raise the dead, liberate the captive, and speak good news to the poor." ~Micah Bales, writer, teacher and Quaker pastor

What is our Mission and our Message?

In light of the violence that took place in our Capitol on January 6th, I feel that the Church really needs to ask itself how shall we respond - what is our mission and our message? We are to preach the Gospel... The message of God's love for humankind made manifest in Jesus Christ. Let's live our lives as letters read by everyone, preach the Gospel... use words if necessary.

Who Are We Talking About

I think that it's time for the Church to get back to the Gospel message.

Whatever happened to the Great Commission and the Great Commandment? I'm afraid that we have lost our prophetic voice and our moral standing.

I'm not saying that we can't speak out about injustice, no... I'll be the first one to speak out. But the Church has carried the water for far too many politicians for far too long.

We're supposed to be the separate, called out ones of God but we've become enmeshed with the political system and have lost our uniqueness.

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2)

Happy New Year - 2021

Happy New Year! Not sure how "new" this year will look but we sure could use a bit of the advertising magic of "New and Improved" right about now.

Our mission as followers of Jesus has been and will always be to spread a little light around the darkness, add some spice and keep peoples lives from decaying.

I'm looking forward to a re-energized focus for 2021.

As always,

Peace, Love and Light!

Post Election - Love Is The Way Forward!

In this post election season the Church needs to remember who we represent and His message of love for the whole world.

We need to be the expression of His love. We need to love each other. We need to love those we disagree with. We need to love our enemies. We need to remember that we are the only Jesus that the world will ever see.

Love is the only way to heal our land! Love is the only way forward!

Here is a song from back in the days of the Jesus People Movement that became the anthem of the Movement.

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.” ~Jesus
