Rock Mass - Christmas 2023 Edition

May you have a blessed Christmas
and a peaceful New Year!

Peace, Love and Light!

The inspiration for creating "Rock Mass" came from the Rock Mass at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena California back in the early 1970’s. On the first Friday night of each month All Saints held a Rock Mass which was a mix of traditional Episcopalian Mass and rock concert. A live band would play popular rock music which couldn’t necessarily be called “Christian” but contained spiritual phrases and references to God or Jesus. During the 1960’s and early 1970’s there was an explosion of these songs coming out of the "secular" music industry way before there was “Contemporary Christian Music”, in a way, it could be called "The Gospel According To Billboard's Top 10".

Love, It's The Law

Be under obligation to no one—the only obligation you have is to love one another. Whoever does this has obeyed the Law. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not desire what belongs to someone else”—all these, and any others besides, are summed up in the one command, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If you love others, you will never do them wrong; to love, then, is to obey the whole Law. (Romans 13:8-10)

Jesus said to them, “But, whom do you say that I am?”

Then Simon Peter answered, and said, “You are the Christ; the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus answered, and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon, the son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my Father Who is in Heaven."

Rock Mass - July 2, 2023

And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

Love is the Higher Law

Rev Kev Sez: the Law of Love is greater than the law of the land!

No matter what SCOTUS says is legal, we are held to a higher law. The commandment to love your neighbor as yourself and the principle of treating others as you wish to be treated doesn't allow any room for religiously motivated discrimination.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” ~ Jesus (John 13:34)

Rock Mass - May 7, 2023

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

~Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1890 - 1969

Quite Places

I haven't written much in a while, life has been particularly difficult lately and has handed us some challenges with no clear path to take. Finding the time to post has not been easy and being able to string together a few complete sentences to create a coherent paragraph has been nearly impossible for me.

Raising an autistic teenager who now refuses to take prescribed medication is turning out to be one of the most challenging experiences ever in my life and right now that responsibly is all consuming.

At this moment, I'm sitting in a church parking lot on a rainy May morning. Not because I thought that's where God would be but mostly because I needed a quiet place to think. I like it when I can be by myself and in my own head away from the noise of other's thoughts and demands and away from an un-medicated emerging mental health crisis.

But, it is in those quiet places that do I meet God. Those quiet places can be almost anywhere, most often for me it's out in nature.

I must go now and take care of some responsibilities, but I'll try to post more often. And I'll keep trying to find those quiet moments alone with myself and God.

“Be still, and know that I am God"

Psalm 46:10

Rock Mass

Rock Mass - Easter Edition 2023

While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” (Luke 24:4-7)

You Say You Want A Revolution

If you desire to experience a true "Jesus Revolution" then go back to following Jesus.

Read Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters 5 through 7. Then read it again and again and again. You will find all that you need to know about being a true follower of Jesus in those three chapters. That is where us Jesus Freaks started, there in the simple truth of Jesus' words. No fancy theology, no complicated rituals, no conforming to what the establishment church wanted us to be.

We wanted something more genuine than religion. We wanted something more fulfilling than empty rituals. We wanted something based on love rather than rules. That is what is contained in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' instructions on how to follow him.

Here is my condensed version of the Sermon on the Mount written as The Hippie Christian Manifesto:

The Hippie Christian Manifesto
